Padres' Cabrera arrested for DUI

Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera faces a DUI charge following his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana, authorities reported Friday.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera faces a DUI charge following his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana, authorities reported Friday.

Federal agents detained Cabrera, 27, at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on State Route 94 in Dulzura about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

A California Highway Patrol officer went to the inspection site, determined that Cabrera allegedly was under the influence of cannabis and arrested him, CHP public-affairs Officer Kevin Pearlstein said.

Upon his arrival at the Highway Patrol's El Cajon-area office, Cabrera no longer was showing signs of intoxication, so he was cited and released to the custody of his mother-in-law, Pearlstein said.

The Padres issued the following statement Friday:

"We were made aware of an incident involving Everth Cabrera this week, and we take this matter very seriously. We are in the process of gathering information and are in communication with Major League Baseball. We refrain from further comment at this time."

Cabrera has been on the disabled list for a strained left hamstring since Aug. 10.

Last year, he was suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball after being linked to performance-enhancing drugs. In 2012, the Nicaragua native was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence stemming from an alleged incident with his wife during spring training. Prosecutors wound up dropping the charges.
