SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Retired closer Trevor Hoffman will be inducted into the Padres Hall of Fame Aug. 30, the team announced Monday.
Hoffman, who ranks second on the all-time saves list with 601 saves, 552 of them while wearing a San Diego uniform.
"I'm thrilled to be inducted into the Padres Hall of Fame," said Hoffman, who is now a special assistant to the general manager. "To be able to join a group of people whose contributions have not only shaped our organization, but also strengthened the game of baseball, is an honor."
He will be the ninth person to be inducted into the Padres Hall of Fame, joining Buzzie Bavasi, Nate Colbert, Jerry Coleman, Tony Gwynn, Randy Jones, Ray Kroc, Dick Williams and Dave Winfield.
Hoffman was selected unanimously by a committee consisting of members of the local media and the Padres' front office.
"Trevor means so much to this organization. His profound impact for more than two decades -- on the field, in the community and now in the front office -- has been monumental," said Mike Dee, president and CEO of the Padres. "Trevor's induction into the Padres Hall of Fame has been a long time coming and is the latest recognition of what he has meant to Padres fans and the San Diego community."
Dee said the team plans to relocate and revamp the Hall of Fame exhibit at Petco Park in the near-future.
The converted shortstop was acquired from the Marlins in 1993 in exchange for star slugger Gary Sheffield and went on to compile a record of 54-64 in 16 seasons, with a 2.76 ERA and 1,029 strikeouts.
The induction ceremonies will take place at Petco Park before a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
