Rocky Long, former San Diego State football coach, returns as coach at New Mexico

Long was the coach of the Lobos from 1998 - 2008 before joining the staff at SDSU in 2011.

Rocky Long didn't stay out of college football coaching ranks for long. As many expected, the former San Diego State head football coach found a new job after stepping down on January 8, 2020.

According to a tweet from New Mexico head football coach, Dan Gonzales, Long is heading back to New Mexico as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Long left San Diego State after nine years. His 81-38 record at San Diego State is the second-winningest record at the school behind Don Coryell in 1961-1972.

His hiring by New Mexico is a bit of a homecoming for coach Long. He was the head coach for his alma mater from 1998-2008.

It also reunites him with coach Gonzales, who briefly played for Long at New Mexico and also served as an assistant coach under Long.
