San Diego Gull & first black NHLer, Willie O’Ree, inducted to Hockey Hall of Fame

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - San Diego has another Hall of Famer! Willie O’Ree broke the color barrier in the NHL, and later starred on the San Diego Gulls is now a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s 2018 class.

O’Ree was the first black man to play in an NHL when he suited up for two games in 1958 for the Boston Bruins. 

O’Ree played in San Diego for over seven seasons totaling over 407 games where he had over 150 goals and 160 assists. 

Four players were voted in along with O’Ree: goaltender Martin Brodeur, Canadian women’s star Jayna Hefford, forward Martin St. Louis and Alexander Yakushev. 

The induction ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 12 at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
