SAN DIEGO — Two San Diego Wave FC stars have been named to the United States Women’s National Team for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Defender Naomi Girma, 24, and Jaedyn Shaw, 19, will join Team USA’s 18-player team when the Olympic Games kick off in Paris on July 25, one day before the opening ceremonies.
Girma and Shaw are both first-time Olympians.
“Making an Olympic roster is a huge privilege and an honor and there is no denying that it was an extremely competitive process among the players and that there were difficult choices, especially considering how hard everyone has worked over the past 10 months,” said U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach Emma Hayes.
The USWNT will be part of Group B, along with other countries including Australia, Zambia and Germany.
Naomi Girma
Girma has had a historic year, capping it off with her very first Olympic games. Girma was named 2023 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year and was the first pure defender to earn the recognition in the award's 39-year history.
She was considered a key player at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Jaedyn Shaw
Shaw is the youngest player on the USWNT roster and is making her first Olympic debut in Paris. Before Shaw joined the senior team, she played with the U.S. Women's Youth National Team and was named U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year in 2022.
