SAN DIEGO — Soccer icon Alex Morgan has announced that she is pregnant with her second child and will be retiring from the San Diego Wave and professional soccer after "one last game".
Morgan, considered one of the greatest players in U.S. Women's National Team history and also one of the most popular and recognized soccer stars will play her final game against the North Carolina Courage at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday, September 8.
The 35-year-old soccer icon made the announcement in a video posted on social media Thursday morning.
In the video, she said, "I'm going to get to the point quickly.. I'm retiring".
"Soccer has been a part of me for 30 years and it was one of the first things I ever loved... and I gave everything to this sport, and what I got in return was more than I could have ever dreamed of.”
Morgan also announced that she is pregnant, "Charlie is going to be a big sister. I am pregnant."
Morgan was named the 2012 U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year and was co-captain for the U.S. team from 2018-2020. She is a two-time World Cup champion and an Olympic gold medalist in 2012.
She finished her USWNT career with 123 goals and fifth place all-time.
Since signing with the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) newest team in San Diego, in December 2021, she has been an integral part of the new franchise.
In the team's first regular season home game, Morgan tied a league record with four goals as the San Diego Wave Fútbol Club defeated NJ/NY Gotham FC, 3-0.
