JULIAN, Calif. — Julian is a short drive away from most places in San Diego, but it's a whole other world when it comes to looking at the heavens.
And while in the city it's almost impossible to look the sky at night and see more than a few stars, up in Julian it's a different story and they have just been designated a Dark Sky Community.
"Light pollution drowns out our view of the universe that we are a part of. Julian is now an International Dark Sky Community, the second in California," said Doug Sollosy with the Julian Dark Sky Network.
The second is Borrego Springs and now with Julian are two of 24 in the United States. certificated by the International Dark Sky Association.
"It means the community has reached a consensus on preserving our nighttime environment and not letting light pollute it," Sollosy said.
The Julian Dark Sky Network holds Star parties to share with others.
"We set-up telescopes and large binoculars so families and kids, even people from the city can come up," explained Sollosy. "We look at [it] as they become Ambassadors to combating light pollution."
