Pedestrian struck by multiple vehicles, killed on I-5 North freeway in San Diego Thursday morning

The northbound I-5 left lane was closed near Mission Bay Drive for more than four hours on Thursday causing heavy traffic during the morning commute.

SAN DIEGO — A person was struck by at least one vehicle in the fast lane of Interstate 5 north around 5:50 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. A male pedestrian was walking within traffic lanes of I-5, north of Mission Bay Drive where he was hit by a black Mazda sports utility vehicle.

The initial report was that a vehicle had hit a large object. Upon further investigation, officers determined that the driver had hit a pedestrian.

The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries. According to CHP, an unknown number of other vehicles also impacted the pedestrian. There are no other specific details about the deceased individual at this time.

The driver who hit the pedestrian remained on the scene. It is unknown if any drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision according to CHP.

The northbound I-5 left lane was closed near Mission Bay Drive for more than four hours on Thursday causing heavy traffic during the morning commute. All of the lanes were reopened at 10:14 a.m.
