SAN DIEGO — San Diego drivers should prepare for delays and detours in the Hillcrest area starting Saturday morning, January 27, and ending on Sunday evening, January 28.

The closures will begin at 5 a.m. Saturday and will last until 5 p.m. on Sunday.

This construction will be focused on a new pedestrian bridge that crosses over State Route 163 and 6th Avenue at the on- and off-ramps that connect to Scripps Mercy Hospital.

The following roads will be affected:

  • Eastbound Interstate 8 (I-8) connector to southbound SR-163
  • Eastbound I-8 on-ramp from Hotel Circle South
  • Southbound SR-163 off-ramp to 6th Avenue/University Avenue
  • Northbound SR-163 on-ramp from 6th Avenue/University Avenue

Drivers coming from Interstate 8 will be detoured via the northbound SR-163 connector ramp to Friars Road West off-ramp then turn right onto the SR-163 on-ramp.

Southbound drivers coming from SR-163 and 6th Avenue are advised to exit at the Washington Street East off-ramp towards 4th Avenue then take a right to head to Scripps Mercy Hospital or take a left to head towards Hillcrest.

Northbound drivers on SR-163 can head east on University Avenue then take a left at Normal Street, a left on Lincoln Avenue, and another left on Washington Street to the northbound SR-163 on-ramp.

This work is subject to change based on current weather conditions, traffic incidents and other potential considerations.
