SAN DIEGO — A survey by TripAdvisor found that nearly one third of the nation will be traveling somewhere this Labor Day weekend.
While millions will fly to their destinations, 61% of those traveling will hit the roads, and San Diego law enforcement will be working to keep everyone safe.
Last Labor Day, 36 people lost their lives on California highways, and this holiday weekend, law enforcement is hoping to bring those numbers down as they remind drivers that if they are going drink, to come up with a plan beforehand to get home safely.
“Our goal is to remove impaired drivers, distracted drivers, drivers who are not wearing seat belts,” said California Highway Patrol Officer Jake Sanchez.
While recreational cannabis is now legal, law enforcement is cautioning drivers that consuming it and getting behind the wheel is not legal.
“If you put it into your body and you drive a motor vehicle, and it impairs your ability to drive, you will go to jail on a DUI,” said Officer Sanchez.
At the San Diego International Airport, travelers are braving the busy travel weekend. Some passengers were treated to a musical interlude as they departed or arrived at San Diego.
Florida resident Richard Mehall said he is looking forward to not laboring this weekend and escaping the arrival of Hurricane Dorian. However, he did say he is anxious at the same time.
“I am impacted because I am wondering if my place is going to be there when I get home,” he said.
Maximum enforcement will last though Monday at midnight.
California has the highest number of drug recognition expert trained personnel in the country. Those experts will be on duty through the state this entire holiday weekend.
