SAN DIEGO — San Diego is a top destination for people to spend their Labor Day weekend. The crowds also create a big boom for our tourism industry.
Labor Day serves as the last chance for many businesses to take advantage of summer tourism. We talked to several families from Arizona. Stacy's family came into town for a soccer tournament.
"We supported a small local business by ordering pizza the other night and having a pizza party at our hotel. we're looking forward to going to the Waves game tonight," said Stacy Johnson, visiting from Arizona.
AAA predicted a 9% increase in travel compared to last year. Many people drove here while others, like Zeke visiting from Texas, flew in.
"Oh man, I love it here. We just did the canoe," he said.
Activities like canoeing, dining at restaurants, shopping, or staying at hotels have a big impact on the local economy.
The San Diego Tourism Authority says the three-day weekend brought in $87 million back in 2022.
Terry who has lived here for decades says he's happy to share America's finest city with all who visit.
"Here I am the happiest poor man in San Diego. I can't put it simpler than that but we are so spoiled. I'm happy for all of these people here. Take advantage of our beach come and enjoy it," he said.
If you're driving home on Monday, experts recommend leaving in the morning before 10 a.m. If you decide to leave Tuesday then it's best to go after 1 p.m.
