Travel picking up despite CDC recommendations

With more people vaccinated, many are hoping they can resume spring break and summer vacation travel.

SAN DIEGO — After a year of feeling trapped at home, travel agents say many are eager to get back out there, especially with more people vaccinated and lockdowns loosened.

"We are definitely seeing a large increase in booking requests going into spring break and summer time," said Elizabeth McEachron of Avant-Garde Travel.

The CDC still recommends delaying travel and staying home, even if you are vaccinated.

But if you must travel outside of the state, the agency recommends getting tested one to three days before your trip.

"It is also encouraging folks to self quarantine for 10 days if they do travel to another state or country," said Nathan Fletcher, San Diego County Supervisor.

Local travel agents say Florida is a popular domestic destination for spring and Mexico is a popular international destination.

"Cancun, Cabo get away to a beach area," said McEachron.

"Mexico and the Caribbean is very popular at the moment," said Steven Krumholz of KGAY Travel.

Since places are desperate for tourism, there are some great deals to be had.

"I just looked at the Sheraton in Puerto Vallarta for May and I'm not kidding, it was $100 a night," said Krumholz.

"They're offering very reduced fares, as low as $1,000 for a week cruise in Europe when it reopens," said McEachron.

Cruises are still not allowed in the United States, but the CDC is watching.

"They are starting up from Bermuda, Bahama, St. Martin and other places to show that they can do this safely," said Krumholz.

Travel experts are also noticing more lenient cancellation policies to help people feel like their investments are protected.
