IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. — Another major winter storm is headed San Diego’s way and with it will come high tides and huge waves.
The waves on Tuesday made their way up and over the beach in Imperial Beach by the Tijuana Estuary during the peak of high tide. They didn’t do any damage, but the possibility is there all week during what are called king tides.
Scripps scientist, Mele Johnson, was at the beach on Tuesday morning “trying to get a sense for what the tides look like.” She was collecting data at the beach, looking at the potential of flooding and erosion. She says the tides have been an issue for many years and that now it is just a common occurrence.
The large waves are a beautiful sight to see, and for surfers who can handle the big waves it can be the type of morning they dream of.
For researchers this is all just the beginning. They say as the winter goes on and San Diego gets bigger waves, it might be more vulnerable to these bigger tide events.
The city put out signs warning of minor coastal flooding. They also will have extra maintenance crews on hand to remove debris from roadways or perhaps even cars that get stuck.
