SAN DIEGO — Sunshine and warmth continue for the afternoons ahead on Thursday and Friday across San Diego County as Santa Ana winds remain active. Overnight low temperatures continue to cool down well below normal with widespread 30s and 40s before the midday warm-up arrives, so dressing in layers is suggested. A more unsettled, active stretch of weather could bring clouds and a chance of showers by the end of the weekend into the beginning of next week. While it's proving to be intense toward Northern California, this storm will weaken tremendously on its way down the coast.
As high pressure remains dominant, expect periods of gusty offshore winds and low humidity favoring inland San Diego County through Friday. This will dry us out and bring elevated fire weather concerns. Though the winds will not be as gusty as the last time we had Santa Ana winds, or as dry, we should still be mindful of these conditions. Our next chance for wet weather in the forecast does not arrive until the weekend.
We will hold onto the warmth on Thursday and Friday afternoons before a slide in temperatures by the weekend and a chance for rain. Overnight lows continue to be rather chilly, cooler than normal by 5 to 10 degrees. We have recently been seeing widespread 40s and even 30s at times prior to sunrise.
THURSDAY TEMPERATURES:
SEASONAL (AVERAGE) DAYTIME HIGHS:
- Coastal highs near 69 to 71 degrees
- Inland valley highs near 72 degrees
- Mountain highs near 57 degrees
- Desert highs near 77 degrees
AT THE COAST:
High pressure will be swapped out for an area of low pressure over the weekend. Clouds will build on Saturday ahead of the system as winds start to pick up. Temperatures will cool again. As the system closes in, models suggest a chance for light to moderate rain from Saturday afternoon/evening through Tuesday. It looks to be on-again, off-again activity during this time frame.
The bulk of the moisture will favor North County with projected totals lower the farther south you are in the county.
