A mild Election Day with Santa Ana winds coming Wednesday and Thursday | San Diego Local Forecast

Strong offshore winds will lead to low humidity and high fire danger for midweek, not only for San Diego County but across Southern California.

SAN DIEGO — It's Election Day across the U.S. and the forecast here in San Diego County looks beautiful. While early morning temperatures are slightly chilly depending on how far east you are, afternoon conditions will be sunny and pleasant. Expect a breeze to start to pick up today across our local mountains, but a notable increase and shift in wind direction will effect the county more so for Wednesday and Thursday. All in all, there's no excuse not to have your vote counted today, whether it be by dropping off a mail-in ballot or going to vote in person.

Now that clouds have come and gone, offshore, Santa Ana winds will contribute to a strong drying trend across Southern California this week with the most intense winds Wednesday through Thursday morning. This will lead to a dry, sunny weather pattern this week. Winds will come from the east and northeast and travel over coastal mountain slopes, compressing the air, which also heats it and dries it out. This will lead to high fire danger across the county due to low humidity. There's also a good chance that afternoon temperatures will reach above normal at times, west of the mountains. On the flip side, the mountains and desert will be cooler than usual.

A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for San Diego County. While the entire county should be on alert, the highest concerns will be in the inland valleys and mountains with the strongest winds on Wednesday night through Thursday morning.

Long term models show no major change in the forecast this week. Expect afternoon high temperatures to rest in a similar place everyday through Friday. The weekend shows only minor cooling while we hold on to sunshine with a few clouds developing. While still about a week away, some models are pointing to a small chance for rain in the forecast by early next week. It will come along with a slide in temperatures down to the upper 60s along the coast and low 70s inland. It's too early to give any details on potential rain, but by the end of the week we should have a better picture.
