RENO, Nev. (AP) — A strong weather system is moving into the Sierra and northern Nevada with gusty winds, much colder temperatures and chances of rain throughout the region through the weekend.
Unseasonably warm temperature in the upper 80s (upper 20s Celsius) on Thursday were forecast to drop 20 degrees colder than average with snow possible in the upper elevations. Sub-freezing temperatures area-wide by Monday should continue through at least the middle of next week.
The National Weather Service issued a high-wind warning for Lake Tahoe, where gusts up to 45 mph (72 kph) could create 4-foot (1.2-meter) waves. It issued a red flag warning for high fire danger across much of northern Nevada for Saturday.
A freeze watch begins Saturday night along the Sierra's eastern front, and Sunday through Tuesday for an expanded area including Reno, Carson City, Lyon and Mineral counties.
