OCEANSIDE, Calif. — The Oceanside Harbor is an area attracting locals and tourists for a day of fishing, boating or surfing. Recent incidents have prompted the addition of a security camera system and the increase of law enforcement at the harbor.
“Overall crime has actually been going down in the harbor. However, you know there were a couple high profile incidents and we do want to make sure that those incidents do not continue,” Oceanside City Manager Jonathan Borrego said.
The newly installed camera system is mounted on a trailer and records activity taking place in the area of the Harbor.
“We’ve increased our police department patrols in the harbor now from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. every single day of the week. So we do have officers out there patrolling the harbor now full-time," Borrego said.
There are more initiatives being considered at the Harbor including additional cameras, the installation of a Kiosk near the campground area and a curfew on the fire rings.
“We have actually been sharing our ideas and thoughts with our Harbor Beaches Advisory Committee which is a city council appointed board so we did run the ideas that I mentioned to you by that board to get the communities input on that and they were largely supportive of everything that we’re recommending,” Borrego said.
Borrego tells CBS 8, the 11 p.m. curfew on the fire rings near Harbor Beach is an ordinance expected to be presented in a future council meeting in December for consideration. If approved, it will go into effect early next year.
