SAN DIEGO — A shooting over the weekend has left a 17-year-old paralyzed. She's the niece of local activist Shane Harris.
On Wednesday, he held a news conference to give an update. The family and Harris said they are looking for justice.
"My baby girl did not deserve this. And we don't deserve this. If you are watching, I'd love for you to bring yourself in, voluntarily," Mother Tanesha Wallace said.
Shane Harris also took the time to share some words. He called out these acts of violence that didn’t just happen this weekend in SD, but also across the nation.
"Cut the shooting. You ain't bold. You ain't getting no [any] points for shooting someone else. You may think you're coming up the ladder, but you're taking your whole community down with you," Harris said at a press conference.
Harris and the family said Brianna is a top GPA student. She is a cheerleader and is very involved in school. That night she had decided to leave a sweet 16 party and got mixed into a gang-related fight that Wallace had no relation.
Here’s what San Diego Police have confirmed so far: the shooting happened overnight on Saturday, and police said that Brianna left a party at the 4400 block of Winona Ave.
It's after that point when some sort of altercation between two groups happened. One person pulled out a gun and fired shots.
One of those bullets hit Harris' niece on the upper back. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The people involved in the altercation quickly fled the scene. As of this report, San Diego police are still searching for the suspect or suspects.
Now, that incident is one of three separate shootings that happened this past weekend. Another incident happened at Novo Brazil Brewing in Chula Vista. Officers found four people shot at that location.
One of the victims is a 16-year-old boy who got shot in the leg. He is believed to have been involved in the dispute. A 58-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman who had no connection to either group were also shot in the leg.
In addition, a 21-year-old woman received treatment after a bullet grazed her leg. All of them are expected to be okay.
On Sunday, two teenagers were shot and killed at a house party at a short-term vacation rental in El Cajon. The 18-year-old and 16-year-old appeared to have been targeted by a shooter who fled the scene.
Police said the shooting appeared to be gang-related. No suspects have been located in any of these shootings.
