Update: All San Diego schools, districts closed for power shutoffs expected to re-open Friday

Vallecitos School District previously planned to be closed Friday, Nov. 1 before power was restored to the area of Rainbow on Thursday.

SAN DIEGO — Latest update: 3:40 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31

Following several school closures on Wednesday and Thursday, the San Diego County Office of Education announced that all schools and districts are expected to be open Friday.

Eight school districts in the county and one additional school were closed Thursday due to actual and possible power shutoffs. A Red Flag Warning issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect through Thursday evening for areas of San Diego. 

On Wednesday, SDG&E cut off power to tens of thousands of customers and warned more customers in high fire risk areas of additional potential public safety power shutoffs. Power was restored to more than 16,000 customers as of Thursday afternoon.

A statement on the county office of education's latest update page read in part: 

"Power has been restored to the community of Rainbow, home to Vallecitos School District, which will allow the district to re-open tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 1.

All schools and districts that closed this week because of actual or anticipated power shutoffs are expected to be open tomorrow as well."

The following districts closed Thursday, Oct. 31: 

  • Dehesa School District
  • Julian Union High School District
  • Julian Union School District
  • Mountain Empire Unified School District
  • Rancho Santa Fe School District
  • Spencer Valley School District
  • Vallecitos School District
  • Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District

San Pasqual Academy, a school operated by the San Diego County Office of Education in Escondido, also closed Oct. 31.

The following schools were closed Wednesday, Oct. 30: 

  • Dehesa School District
  • Julian Union High School District
  • Julian Union School District
  • Mountain Empire Unified School District
  • Rancho Santa Fe School District
  • Spencer Valley School District
  • Warner Unified School District

In addition to those districts the following three schools were also closed: 

  • Escondido Union School District: Conway Elementary
  • Escondido Union High School District: Del Lago Academy
  • San Marcos Unified School District: Double Peak, San Elijo Elementary, and San Elijo Middle School '
