CHULA VISTA, Calif. — A teenage boy arrested for a shooting inside a restaurant in Otay Ranch appeared in court for the first time Wednesday.
The 15-year-old boy, whose name is not being released, was arraigned on eight charges, including attempted murder.
Those charges stem from a shooting that happened on Oct. 28 inside Novo Brazil Brewery, located in the Otay Ranch Town Center.
CBS 8 obtained surveillance video captured that night. The video shows people running through the restaurant as customers duck for cover.
Initially, there were fears of an active shooter loose in the Otay Ranch Town Center, causing police to lock down the mall.
Chula Vista police say the shooting started as a dispute between two groups of people. They believe the 15-year-old arrested was the only one who fired shots.
The victims included a 16-year-old boy shot in the legs, who investigators say was involved in the initial dispute.
Two bystanders, a 58-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman, were also hit. A third bystander, a 21-year-old woman, suffered a graze wound. None of the wounds were life-threatening.
The prosecutor in the case told CBS 8 that because the shooter is being charged as a juvenile, he will only face time until the age of 25 if convicted.
The next hearing is scheduled for November 28. Until then, the teenager will remain in custody.
