SAN DIEGO — A 17-year-old San Diego native has made history as the first player signed to San Diego FC, marking a significant milestone for Major League Soccer in the region.
Duran Ferree, a U.S. youth national goalkeeper from the San Diego County community of 4S Ranch, signed a four-year contract through 2027 with San Diego FC.
According to the club, MLS rules prohibit signing players until 2024, but are allowed to sign local, San Diego-based young players.
“I’m honored to sign with my new hometown club,” said Ferree. “To be part of San Diego soccer history and play for my home city is beyond my wildest dreams.”
The club’s symbolic signing of Ferree, a San Diego native, will allow him to continue his soccer career in Southern California where he grew up.
“This signing spotlights our commitment to providing opportunities for local talent to flourish right here in San Diego. Duran’s San Diego roots, natural talent, and promise for the future make him a valuable addition to our Club,” said Tom Penn, CEO, San Diego FC.
The club expects to announce more player signings in early 2024, in anticipation of the kick-off of San Diego FC’s inaugural season in 2025.
Ferree was considered a standout player at San Diego Surf Soccer Club and signed a professional contract with the former San Diego Loyal at 15-years-old. He debuted professionally in April 2022.
"I am eager to contribute to the growth and success of the Club, and I am excited about the journey ahead with my future teammates and the incredible fans in San Diego," Ferree said.
